Maréchal of the Empire
André Masséna was born in Nice in 1758. He raises quickly in the ramy ranks during the Revolution and serves under Bonaparte's command in Italy. He fights back the Austrians and get fame at the Rivoli battle.
Napoléon, during the Empire, turns him into the Duke of Rivoli, and then Prince of Essling and gives him the command of the army of Portugal. His failure in front of the British ends the trust Napoléon had in him and he will never again have an important command.
He serves then Louis the 18th before he dies in 1817.
The main square and the main high school of Nice bear his name.
The museum with his name actually bears the name of his grand son, who built the house where it is located.
